Born at the turn of the century, Liang utilizes the friction between intense societal acceleration and the sudden stagnation of the 2020s as his central conceptual engine. His research focuses on disused architectural monuments—once symbols of urban spectacle—and obsolete everyday objects, structures that carry the specters of 'lost futures' as the core of his visual language. Liang regards architecture not merely as inert construction, but as a material envelope that actively conditions, shapes, and constrains human living space. Although human figures are explicitly absent from his environments, the mundane objects and techno-accelerationist remnants saturating these spaces quietly and playfully testify to contemporary alienation and the spectral traces of existence.
Engaging with this compressed existential state, Liang extends his practice into a spatial methodology of structural inversion and contextual displacement. He disrupts normative architectural hierarchies—reconfiguring ceiling lighting grids onto the floor, inverting the spatial dynamic between the eye and the projector, placing missiles inside a modified microwave oven to heat them and amplify the timer's ding, or encapsulating a gallery staircase to build an inaccessible cinema enclosure where viewers find themselves stranded at the end of a corridor, confronted by crowded theater seats they cannot enter. As physical space is systematically reconfigured, the bodily alienation experienced within these environments gradually gives way to a more complex dialogue: confronting the scars of architectural history, the paradoxes of human progress, and the haunting vacuum left behind when grand fantasies of the future collapse.
Recently, Liang has been developing his practice and research at his studio in Fulham, London.
On the practice
The emotional resonance of Liang's work anchors on the volatility at intersection of contemporary speed and stagnation, and the uncertainty of the human's position within it.'
