Xinghao Liang working across painting, installation, objects, and constructed environments, he approaches space as a site of research rather than simply a setting for the work.

Born on the edge of the turn of the century, Liang has experienced the past decade as a period of intense acceleration—an impulse constantly directed towards the future, which, upon entering the 2020s, has gradually revealed itself as a condition of stagnation and suspended progress. This contradictory experience of time, together with the Brutalist architecture of former socialist states such as the Soviet Union, has deeply informed his practice and led him to construct situations that seem to hover between what has already happened and what has yet to arrive.

His works occupy an awkward and indeterminate space between the past and the future, where things appear familiar yet strangely detached from their own time. What becomes central is the unspoken distance between them—the sense of isolation that emerges between objects, spaces and moments, as if suspended between the past and the future.

The individual painting, object, or installation is rarely the subject in itself. Instead, Liang is interested in the spaces separated or left between things: the distance between objects, the loneliness of isolated forms, and the uneasy relationships that emerge when familiar elements are displaced from their expected context.
